What is Clarinet?

The clarinet is a woodwind instrument. It is invented by Johann Christoph Denner at the start of the 18. century. It was similar to chalumeau that sounded nice at lower registers and also clarinet has been rich sounds as well as low and high registers. However, clarinet means small trumpet because "clarino" word means trumpet. 

The clarinet had only two keys until 18. century and then more keys were added to it. So, clarinet increased its own characteristic sounds, ıt was played more easily. It has been made of different materials but the mostly used element is boxwood. The standard clarinet has been made by Klose based on Boehm in 19. Century. 

For clarinet making, grenadilla is used material. Grenadilla has a higher density and suitable than boxwood. That type of wood is also known as Brya ebenus, cocuswood or West Indıan ebony. But plastic clarinets are better resistant to rain and sunshine. Even so, most of the clarinet players prefer one of wooden because of sound richer.

Although you may find metal clarinets which sound very different from wooden or plastic clarinets in Turkish and Greek, its difference is barely audible. Metal clarinets are lighter than others because of thinness.

Types of Clarinet

The types of clarinet include various sizes and sounds. But they are similar clarinet instruments like piccolo clarinet, bass clarinet and contrabass clarinet. There are little differences beetween them. There are several types of clarinet such as Bb clarinet, Eb clarinet, the larger and bass clarinets.

All types of clarinet are Bb clarinet, Eb clarinet, C clarinet, A clarinet, D clarinet, Basset clarinet, Basset Horn clarinet, Bass clarinet, Contra Alto clarinet and Contra Bass clarinet.

The types of clarinet can be same size that has tubes of different lengths. Soprano clarinet types have been ranging from the C-tube that the shortest tube to the G-tube that the longest. Furthermore, the Bb-tube soprano clarinet and A-tube soprano clarinet seem to be the most popular nowadays.


How to Play Clarinet?

The clarinet is played by blowing into it basically. Then you may cover and uncover the holes with your fingers. Playing clarinet is not harder than other instruments. Firstly, you can blow and find out the sound. If you learn to get sound out, you will enjoy it.

The clarinet can be cleaned regularly and it is easy to care. The reed should be taken off the clarinet and stored in its plastic case. If a clarinet is being left out between practice or playing it can be stored on a special clarinet stand which will help, ensure that it isn’t dropped or fall off something that it is left on.
