How To Choose Right Ney?



It derives from the word nay, which means Persian reed as the origin of the word, and it has taken the expression ney over time. It is a wind instrument and it is called Nâyi or neyzen. It is known that it came from Mesopotamian lands in ancient times. This musical instrument was also found in the excavations of the Sumerians from ancient civilizations. Music is also used in our country. Let's continue with a little more about the selection issue.


Ney, whose history is very old, is also preferred in religious music of Turkish culture. Because of its calm voice and special timbre, it was used in the health system in the old times and in the treatment of mental patients. Due to its unique vibration, it creates positive effects on people. In this respect, it was preferred in Mevlana teachings and semahs. Nowadays, it is also appropriate to play and listen to ney and use it in religious semahs.


Although what is thought to be difficult to learn, it can be started to blow in a very short time with enthusiasm and education like all musical instruments. Many people are eager to play what they do today, as there are high levels of training in terms of breathing exercises.


What is Ney?

Consisting of one piece, nine knuckles, Ney is made of a reed. There are 7 holes on it, the curtain. The music produced is a special cane with yellow knots. In the first and last knuckles of Ney prepared in this way, bracelets called parasite are worn. These bracelets are made of gold, silver or brass.



Its purpose is to prevent the cane from cracking and sound deterioration. The name of my first knuckle in neys; It is başpare. It is made of hardwood, such as boxwood, walnut or amber, with vineyard and ivory in its construction. There are Ney varieties according to the production style and sound types. In Turkish music, generally, ney varieties can be made according to the desired makam. These neys will turn into sounds obtained by changing their length.


  • The main harmony called Bolahenk Nısfiye 505 and 525 mm
  • Bolahenk-Sipure Temple, that is Ara Ahenk 545 to 565 mm
  • 570 to 600 mm for Main Harmony called in sipure
  • 605 to 670 mm for intermediate harmony
  • Star Main Harmony 640 with 670 mm
  • For the main harmony called the girl, 680 and 720 mm
  • Girl Mansur Temple is called Ara Ahenk; 730 and 760 mm
  • Mansur Main Harmony 770- 810 mm

  • David Main Harmony 900 to 940 mm

This variety was developed to be adjusted according to the tone of the artist who will perform the music. The measure that will best capture the variety in sounds is the best tone and Ney can be played in this way in harmony with the artist.

How To Choose Turkish Ney?

In order to choose Ney, you need to know the structure of Ney well. If you are not an expert, support from your educator or expert will be required. Recommendations for beginners The model is what the girl called. This is suggested as the most suitable starting model.
