The Santoor Instrument, which has a history of about 3500 years, according to some, comes from the word "Psanterin" mentioned in the Torah. It was used with minor variations in Hebrews, Egypt, Europe and Iran.

According to a legend about the persian santoor, the uninterrupted use of the instrument, which was banned by the Shah for 500 years on the grounds that it "resembles a woman's voice" in Iran, originated from Iran 1800 years ago, but dates back to Mesopotamia 3500 years ago.

Santoor is an instrument originated in Iraq, Iran and India. The classic Santoor instrument has 72 - 160 wires. But The Persian Santoor is about 90 cm wide at its broad end, 36 cm wide at its narrow end and 6 cm deep. These wires are played with small plectrum(zahme) made of wood. This shape is called both a string instrument and a percussion instrument, also called cordophone. Being a type of Kitara, the instrument is similar to the law in form.

Santoor instrument, a classic dulcimer in the form of a trapezoid box usually made of walnut and similar exotic wood. There are also piano-like pedestal types of santoor called ”Cimbalom”. In this way, both musical instruments and percussion instruments are called cordophones. The Santoor instrument, a Kitara genre, is formally similar to the qanun.

There are two different styles of Persian santoor based on the bridge numbers. Nine kharak persian santoor has eighteen bridges, nine bridges on each side. It is the most common Iranian model and has 27 notes to play. Twelve kharak persian santoor is similar but it has twenty four bridges and this gives it a wider range from E’ to A'.
